1926: Sub-Zero and the Transformation of the American Kitchen

In the early twentieth century, Westye Bakke packed up his wife and two young children on his motorcycle with sidecar to move to Madison, Wisconsin, in search of opportunity. In the 1930s, he began experimenting with refrigeration, inspired by the need to find a better way to store the insulin his young son, Bud, needed for his juvenile diabetes. Existing freezers didn’t do a reliable job of preserving food, medicine and other necessities. Fellow Wisconsin native, architect Frank Lloyd Wright heard of Bakke’s aptitude for designing refrigeration and hired Bakke as a consultant to help create uniquely sized refrigerators for his residential projects. Clarence Birdseye, known as the pioneer of the frozen food industry, also called on Bakke to help perfect quick-freezing techniques that would better preserve the flavor and texture of vegetables and produce.Screen-Shot-2018-07-03-at-9.47.04-AM

You may know that Clarke broke with tradition when designing the prep kitchen in their Sub-Zero/Wolf/Cove Showroom and Test Kitchen in Milford, Mass. When the showroom was completely remodeled in 2017, the once-hidden prep kitchen was designed as a glassed-in "culinary theater" of sorts, where showroom visitors could see the chef activity going on in real-time. The space, painted a striking yellow with black accents, has under-counter and under-toe kick lights that give the space a special glow.

Clarke Intros, Demos and Classes Bring Wolf Appliances to Life

For decades, New England homeowners would shop for appliances by walking down a line of different models and make their selections based almost entirely on price and aesthetics. All they knew about the operation or benefits of an oven or cooktop was what they could read in on the point-of-purchase signage and learn from talking to the salesperson.

In 2013, Fox TV's "MasterChef" cooking couple Anna and AJ Rossi came on Clarke's screen when they both became finalists on the series, which had auditioned 60,000 amateur cooks and narrowed the field to 100, including the Rossis. Anna went on to the finals when her Molten Lava Cake wowed Joe Bastianich, "MasterChef" judge and restauranteur. Following their television debut, Clarke invited Anna and AJ to host a cooking class at the Milford Showroom, which was a big success.
