In the Clarke Designer Spotlight, we go behind the scenes with some of the finest design minds in New England to learn about their inspiration and personal aspirations.

Burke-Cheney-HSMeet Burke Cheney, of Deane Inc. (also known by some as Kitchens by Deane). Burke designed the Connecticut kitchen that won Second Place Contemporary in the Clarke Kitchen Design Contest.

Clarke: How long have you worked at Deane and what did you do previously?

Burke: I have worked for Deane for four years now, and previously I was the Principal Designer for a design/build firm in Connecticut.

Clarke: What is your proudest accomplishment both inside and outside of work?

Burke: I’m proudest of raising two wonderful children, but also proud to have enhanced hundreds of lives through architecture. It heartens me to know my designs serve as backdrops to life’s experiences for many families.

Clarke: What is you favorite material to use in kitchen design and why?

Burke: That’s like asking me which of my children is my favorite. I enjoy finding the right material for the right effect

Clarke: Which Sub-Zero or Wolf appliance is your favorite and why?1_(1)-LR

Burke:
The Wolf Convection Steam Oven because of its versatility.

Clarke: Name something from which you've drawn design inspiration that we might find unusual.

Burke:
A motorcycle seat and saddle bags; black leather with silver studs. I used the two materials to great effect on cabinet doors and drawers.

Clarke: What project haven't you designed that you would love to work on?

Burke:
An Art Nouveau inspired space.

Clarke: When you travel, what's your favorite destination?

Burke:
New Orleans – Great food, music and people.

Clarke: What music do you like to listen to?

Burke:
Jazz, Blues, Rock, Soul, Funk, Brazilian folk music and Samba to name a few.

Clarke: Describe your own home in a few sentences.

Burke:
A 1926 stucco & stone Tudor in the Story Book Cottage style with hedge rows and beautiful English gardens.

Congratulations to Burke on his magnificent award-winning kitchen. We look forward to seeing more of his work in the coming months.
